The Greens/EFA Group is profoundly saddened over the recent execution of several juvenile offenders in Iran, making Iran the only country in the world where this grave violation of international standards of law is still practiced; Strongly condemns the persecution and imprisonment of Iranian citizens in Iran who engage in the defence of human rights and who campaign against the death penalty.

The Greens/EFA Group calls on Israel to bring its legislation into line with international standards of juvenile justice and thus to reform the military legal system applied to Palestinian children, and in particular to immediately release all detained minors from jail; Expresses its deep concern at the situation of Palestinian women prisoners, who are reportedly subjected to mistreatment.

Execution of child offenders in Iran

The Greens/EFA Group is shocked by the execution of the adolescent Mohammed Hassanzadeh at the age of 16. The Group reiterates its strong condemnation of the death penalty in general; calls for an immediate moratorium on executions in Iran and is appalled that Iran continues to have the highest number of executions of child offenders in the world and that the moratorium on stoning is still not fully implemented.

On the result of the Palestinian elections and the situation in East Jerusalem

Green motion on a resolution: We have to respect democratic expression of the Palestinian people

All sides, parties and the international community have to accept the result of the Palestinian elections. However, it is clear that the newly elected Palestinian Government must distance itself from violence. Otherwise the EU should not continue to provide assistance and economic aid.

Situation in Lebanon

Deeply shocked at the car bombing which killed the Lebanese former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the Greens/EFA Group calls on the Lebanese Government and security forces to collaborate fully and provide the UN team with all the means necessary to carry out the investigation. They call on the Council to set up a subcommittee on human rights within the framework of the Association Council once it enters into force.

Human Rights violations in Iran

The Greens/EFA are outraged by the recent condemnation of the 13-year-old child Zhila Izadi to death by stoning after being found pregnant from her 15 year-old brother and calls on the Iranian authorities to immediately halt all attempts of stoning and to prevent any further application of the death penalty to minors.
