Jacques Delors : A Founding Father of the EU & a Tireless Defender of the Europe of the Regions

Today is a sad day for the European Union and for those who believe in the European project.

 

The European Free Alliance Group in the European Parliament is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jacques Delors, 98, former trade unionist, former French minister, former President of the European Commission (1985-1995), and, above all, one of the founding fathers of European Union.

 

His tireless dedication to the European project has probably made him the most impactful President of the European Commission. 

 

His wholehearted efforts to push for a social Europe have made him the most progressive President of the European Commission. 

 

And his vision in favour of a Europe of the Regions was pivotal in granting the regional level a role in the EU, albeit insufficient.
