Plant fuels

UN issued a warning about potential negative impacts of plant fuel production

The report from UN-Energy is entitled "Sustainable Bioenergy: A Framework for Decision Makers" and is the first of its kind to examine the issue of bioenergy through different issues including poverty, health, food security, agriculture, finance, trade and climate change.

Global poduction of energy crops is doubling every few years and 17 countries have so far committed themselves to growing crops on a large scale. The EU recently committed to achieve a 10% minimum binding target for the share of plant fuels in overall transport fuel consumption by 2020.

The report's strong and clear conclusions in terms of possible negative impacts of plant fuels development stresses the need to take a very cautious approach.
