No community left behind / La population au coeur de la transition

Putting people at the centre of the just transition

A lunchtime talk on Tuesday 30 June (12:30 CET)

With Greens/EFA MEPs Mounir Satouri, Henrike Hahn, and Green Mayor of Loos-en-Gohelle, Jean-Francois Caron.

The transition away from fossil-fuel-based economies is starting, and it has the potential to create new jobs and new resources for Europe. In order to avoid the mistakes of the past and leave no one behind, the transition must be bottom up, with the interests of Europe’s territories and local needs at the fore. This is even more important in the context of the current health and economic crisis; a just transition can be the blueprint for long-term, equitable recovery.

Join Greens/EFA MEPs Mounir Satouri and Henrike Hahn to discuss how to safeguard social and economic justice in the transition, the infrastructure and initiatives that will put people at the centre, and how to support green investment in local industry and start-ups.

We hear from Jean-Francois Caron, mayor of Loos-en-Gohelle, a former coal-mining town in France that has pioneered its own environmental and social transition, to discuss on the ground experience.

The COVID-19 pandemic shows us it’s time to say no to business as usual. The crisis exit should not take us back to yesterday’s economy, but compel us to invest in a fair, future facing, and resilient society.

This web talk is part of our What world do we want to return to? series.
