Diana Riba asks for strong anti-SLAPP legislation to honour Daphne Caruana Galizia

EFA MEP Diana Riba intervened in the debate in memory of Daphne Caruana Galizia; a Maltese journalist murdered five years ago.

Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered on the 16th of October of 20. Daphne was a Maltese journalist, writing and researching intensely on corruption links between the Maltese government and the Mafia on the Island.

Diana Riba MEP remembers Daphne's bravery in her fight for the truth. Riba MEP informed that last week two people, the Degiorgio brothers, were sentenced to 40 years in prison and demanded justice and action for those who ordered her murder.

"An important step towards justice, but without forgetting that those who ordered and paid for Daphne's murder are still at large."

MEP Riba i Giner stressed the importance in the European Union of protecting and safeguarding journalists, activists and political opposition from threats and intimidation.

"We cannot allow journalists, activists and political opponents in the European Union to be harassed and threatened by the powerful in order to silence them and prevent them from participating in democratic debate. "

Diana Riba i Giner, EFA MEP, express the need for robust anti-SLAPP legislation to honour the memory and fight of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

"Daphne was a fighter and a heroine. We owe her an anti-SLAPP law at the European level that is as ambitious as possible and prevents cases like hers from happening again. Let's make it happen."
