Conclusion of negotiations for a trade agreement between the EU & Mexico

Quote from Anna Cavazzini MEP

On the conclusion of negotiations for a trade agreement between the European Union and Mexico announced yesterday, Anna Cavazzini MEP, Greens/EFA Member of the International Trade Committee, comments:

"The European Commission is still stuck in the old patterns of outdated trade policy. The regulations on environmental protection are insufficient. The Paris Climate Convention is not effectively anchored and there are no obligations to reduce emissions.

"This agreement pursues a model that is not suitable for limiting climate change to under 1.5 degrees Celsius. While Frans Timmermans is at the Petersburg Climate Dialogue advocating aligning the recovery programme for Europe's economy with the goals of the European Green Deal, Phil Hogan has signed up to a trade agreement that counters these objectives.

"There is a tragic record of human rights and environmental violations by European companies in Mexico, which have not been seriously prosecuted so far. Unfortunately, the envisaged agreement will do little to change this. On the contrary, it will grant investors far-reaching special rights of action, while the provisions on human rights and sustainability are unenforceable."
