MEPs vote in favour of better train connections between cities

Today, MEPs voted in favour of increasing high-speed rail in the EU. The Greens/EFA Group has always supported increasing better rail connections between Europe’s main cities.

Greens/EFA MEP Vicent Marzà Ibáñez, European Parliament rapporteur on the file, comments:

“Getting from one big city to another shouldn’t require a trip to the airport. A high-speed rail connection between Europe’s main cities will enable a massive shift from planes to trains. Increasing these connections will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, create more jobs and significantly increase our strategic autonomy.

“Ensuring high-speed connections across the EU requires adequate investment, including the use of green rail bonds. Improving these connections must not come at the detriment of the commuter and regional rail services, which are an essential part of many people’s lives.”
