However, from the mid 1990s fish populations started\nto severely decline and trends in overfishing became alarming. Then, the CFP\nstarted progressively to integrate sustainability as an objective and, in 2013,&nbsp; to set targets to maintain fish populations\nat sustainable levels. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Despite\nsome progress in the last decade, today most of the fisheries resources and\nmarine ecosystems are in a bad condition.The depletion of fish stocks has not\nonly a major impact on marine biodiversity, but also on the future of fishers\nand fisheries whose income depends on these resources.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">There is an\nurgent need for more ambitious measures that would benefit EU society and\nnature as a whole. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter \" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h1>The EU did not meet its targets <\/h1>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">2020 was\nsupposed to be the year of biodiversity at the international level. It was also\nsupposed to be the year when good environmental status of EU seas was to be\nachieved and when all fish stocks were to be exploited at sustainable levels.\nThese targets are part of the european legislation but EU action has been\nslowed down by short term interests and a lack of progress in the\nimplementation process. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter \" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h1>The situation of EU seas is grim<\/h1>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In the last\ndecades, there were some improvements for fish populations in the Atlantic Ocean\nwhere the CFP is starting to bear fruit. Scientists estimate that around 38% of\nthe stocks assessed are overexploited. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But the\nsituation is very worrying in the Mediterranean Sea, where more than 80% of\nfish stocks are overexploited. Let us also be reminded that these figures are\ncalculated species by species without taking into account marine ecosystems in\ntheir entirety, and only where the respective scientific assessments are\navailable. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The\nEuropean Court of Auditors confirmed this trend: EU action in the past decade\nwas insufficient for the recovery of marine ecosystems and habitats. In\ngeneral, levels of pollution are alarming and climate change has growing\nimpacts on our oceans. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\t<div data-cont class=\"\">\n\t\t\n\n\t\t\n\t\t\t<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\">\n\t\t\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"embed-responsive-item\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/bs36zJceeC0?autoplay=0&#038;mute=1&#038;loop=0&#038;autohide=1&#038;showinfo=0&#038;rel=0&#038;modestbranding=1&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; background:transparent; display:block;\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter \" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h1>What can we do to protect fish\npopulations and marine biodiversity ? <\/h1>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The good\nnews is that if we act now, we can change that future and have healthy oceans,\naccording to some scientists. The EU should therefore put an end to\noverfishing. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This starts\nby fully implementing the 2013 reform of the CFP, by setting fishing quotas in\nline with sustainability criterias from all stocks, in all EU seas. We need to\nreinforce the scientific knowledge of our stocks, making sure enough resources\nare allocated to study all fish populations and the interactions between the\ndifferent species and marine ecosystems they live in. This is key to\nimplementing an ecosystemic approach to fisheries policy. We also need to limit\nthe use of the most destructive fishing techniques, such as all gear that comes\ninto contact with the seabed and so-called Fish Aggregating Devices, as it has\nbeen proven they have very negative consequences on the marine environment. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">To actually\nprotect marine biodiversity, the EU should set an effective network of Marine\nProtected Areas, covering 30% of EU waters with real management plans and a\nhigh level of protection for at least 10% of EU waters, meaning areas where all\ncatches and economic activities are prohibited. According to the European\nEnvironmental Agency (EEA), today less than 1% of European Marine Protected Areas\nare fully protected and integrate fishing bans as part of their management\nmeasures. It is time for the EU to put an end to so-called \u201cpaper parks\u201d. The\n30% target is greenwashing if no measures are taken in these areas, such as\nbans of destructive fishing techniques or other economic activities <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This year\nas part of the EU Green Deal, the European Commission adopted the 2030 EU\nBiodiversity Strategy: a comprehensive roadmap with ambitious targets such as\n10% of highly protected areas. Ambitious targets set in the 2030 Biodiversity\nStrategy must be enshrined in EU legislation and fully implemented.\nConservative forces are trying to turn this back. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter \" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h1>What can you do ?<\/h1>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">2021 will\nbe decisive for marine biodiversity. We need your support to make the voice of\noceans and small-scale fishers heard in the European Parliament ! The\nown-initiative report \u201cMore fish in the Seas\u201d of Caroline Roose, which pushes\nfor ambitious measures, will be voted in the European Parliament\u2019s plenary\nsession next week. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Tweet to those\nMEPs that have not yet pledged to support ambitious measures to get more fish\nin the seas. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter \" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_html\">\n<style>\n                #iframe_cbcr { width: 100%; height: 2460px; overflow-x: hidden;}\n                @media (max-width: 1048px) {\n                               #iframe_cbcr { width: 100%; height: 3400px;\n                }\n<\/style>\n<iframe id=\"iframe_cbcr\" src=\"https:\/\/greens-efa-service.eu\/cbcr\/index-fish.php\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\t<div data-cont>\n\t\t<div class=\"ce  ce-list high-green tc\">\n\t\t\n<div class=\"gouter \" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h2>Key figures<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter \" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_list\">\n<ul><li  data-viewport> At the global level in 2012 it was estimated that $83 billion in lost profits due to overfishing will be lost, of which $12.5 billion will be in Europe (World Bank 2012)<\/li><li  data-viewport>In 2020, only 6% of assessed fish stocks in the Mediterranean were fished at sustainable levels (European Environmental Agency 2020)<br><\/li><li  data-viewport>Last December, EU fisheries ministers set quotas and reduction of fishing efforts at levels exceeding scientific advice. In the Atlantic Ocean, 35% of the quotas were set above sustainable levels. For the Mediterranean Sea, national governments rejected the proposal for a 15% reduction in the fishing effort of trawlers and only adopted a reduction of 7.5%.<\/li><li  data-viewport>12% of European waters are designated as MPAs, but only 1.8% have a management plan.<\/li><li  data-viewport>According to the European Environmental Agency, less than 1% of the EU marine protected areas have high level of protection (EEA 2020)<\/li><li  data-viewport>59% of EU Marine Protected Areas are commercially trawled at levels higher than non-protected areas (European Court of Auditors 2020)<\/li><li  data-viewport>Only 0.23% of the Mediterranean Sea is totally and highly protected. (CNRS 2020)<\/li><li  data-viewport>The Mediterranean region warms 20 times faster than the rest of the globe.
