style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Equal pay for equal work has been a feminist goal for\ndecades, but how can we know what we\u2019re achieving if companies can keep <\/strong><strong>pay packets a secret? Nevertheless,\n there is still a shocking\n 14.1 % pay gap in the\nEU. One of the major drivers of this\ninequality is the lack of transparency\n in our paychecks.\nWe\u2019re not told what our colleagues are earning, so we don\u2019t know if we\u2019re being\ncheated.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Back in March 2021, the European\n  Commission took a step towards economic gender equality with a proposal for a\n  new directive on pay transparency, an efficient tool to combat unequal pay. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Today, companies\nare under no obligation to disclose how much their employees are paid, making\nit impossible to get a clear picture of whether men and women are being paid\nequally for equal work. This leaves everyone unaware that they could be being\npaid less than their co-workers for doing the same job, or of equal value. Very\noften, it is women who bear the brunt of this wage discrimination. We cannot\nfight for fairness when we\u2019re being kept in the dark. To close the gender pay gap, we\nneed to bring to light what\neveryone is earning.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-text-color has-greens-magenta-color\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p style=\"font-size:27px\" class=\"has-text-color has-greens-magenta-color\"><strong>What is \u201cequal\nwork\u201d? Pay transparency can offer a definition<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">One of the main points of the pay transparency directive is to clarify and strengthen the concept of <strong>equal pay for equal work<\/strong>. EU  Member States should establish tools for comparing the value of work based on objective criteria, such as education and training, work experience, skills, effort, responsibility and the job description. And most importantly to us: The criteria must not be neither directly nor indirectly linked to the gender of the worker and should be uniform for all genders. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-text-color has-greens-magenta-color\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p style=\"font-size:27px\" class=\"has-text-color has-greens-magenta-color\"><strong>Knowledge is\npower! We can use pay transparency to fight unfairness with facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The  pay transparency directive will guarantee our <strong>right to information on pay<\/strong>. It demands employers disclose information on the specific pay level of a position before a job interview, and the average pay levels by gender. As an added bonus, larger corporations of 250+ employees are required to conduct and <strong>present statistics on their gender pay gap<\/strong> annually and to take action if any discrepancy persists. This is important leverage for workers in pay negotiations, because knowing the average pay of your peers gives you an idea of what you can demand \u2013 knowledge is power!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-text-color has-greens-magenta-color\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p style=\"font-size:27px\" class=\"has-text-color has-greens-magenta-color\"><strong>There\u2019s strength in numbers. Pay\ntransparency means we can organise against wage inequality<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A crucial aim for the pay transparency directive\n is to <strong>shift the burden of proof<\/strong><strong>\n in cases of wage discrimination.<\/strong>\nThis strengthens the position of workers immensely in the event of a trial, because it makes it the employer\u2019s responsibility to prove the\nabsence of discrimination. Employers found guilty will need to\npay out adequate\ncompensation. Jobs with an overrepresentation of women, like\nnursing and childcare, are drastically underpaid and undervalued compared to\nmale-dominated sectors, where working conditions are similar, but salaries are\nhigher. We need to rebalance our job market. We want as many workers as possible to be covered by  the directive.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>We will keep pushing for progressive action on pay transparency to secure equal pay for women, in particular, and all workers,
