the European Commission is trying to weaken the EU\u2019s regulations on genetically modified organisms (GMOs). It plans to exclude certain GMOs from the existing regulations, so that agricultural corporations can market them without GMO authorisation, traceability or labelling.<\/strong><br><strong><br>Greens\/EFA MEPs <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MartinHaeusling\">Martin H\u00e4usling <\/a>(DE), <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/benoitbiteau\">Benoit Biteau<\/a> (FR),  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eleonoraevi\">Eleonora Evi<\/a> (IT), <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gruffat_claude?lang=de\">Claude Gruffat<\/a> (FR), <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MetzTilly\">Tilly Metz<\/a> (LU), <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/michelerivasi\">Mich\u00e8le Rivasi<\/a> (FR), <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thomaswaitz\">Thomas Waitz<\/a> (AT) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sarahwienerofficial\/\">Sarah Wiener<\/a> (AT) argue that this GMO deregulation plan is dangerous and debunk the Commission\u2019s main arguments.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; background:transparent; display:block;\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-background has-greens-yellow-background-color\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h4 style=\"text-align:left\" class=\"has-background has-greens-yellow-background-color\">What is a GMO?<strong><br><\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size has-black-color has-greens-yellow-background-color\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p style=\"text-align:left\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size has-black-color has-greens-yellow-background-color\">GMO&#8221; stands for &#8220;genetically modified organism&#8221;. A plant or animal becomes &#8220;genetically modified&#8221; (GM) when its genetic make-up is altered in a way that does not happen naturally. This can be done using a range of different techniques.<br><br>We believe that GMOs have no place in nature-friendly farming. Where GM crops are grown, the use of chemical pesticides has gone up, and the power of large agricultural corporations has increased &#8211; at the expense of farmers, consumers and nature. We want all GM products to be strictly regulated. They must be traceable and clearly labelled so that anyone who wants to can avoid them.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-text-color has-medium-font-size has-greens-yellow-color\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p style=\"text-align:right\" class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size has-greens-yellow-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/en\/GMO\"><strong>-&gt; Read more about our GMO campaign<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; background:transparent; display:block;\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-text-color has-greens-orange-color\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h4 class=\"has-text-color has-greens-orange-color\"><strong>How does the European Commission plan to water down the EU\u2019s GMO Regulations?&nbsp;<\/strong><br><\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Big agricultural corporations, like Bayer\/Monsanto and Corteva (formerly, DowDuPont), have long lobbied for the EU to apply its GMO regulations only to genetically modified plants that have had foreign DNA &#8211; i.e. DNA from an unrelated species &#8211; added to their genetic make-up. They claim that plants made with new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/en\/article\/document\/gene-editing-myths-and-reality\">gene editing techniques<\/a> like CRISPR&nbsp; should not be classified as genetically modified (GM).&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Earlier this year, the European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_21_1985\">publicly backed their view<\/a> and announced that it would create separate legislation for such GM plants. Avoiding the unpopular \u201cGM\u201d word, the Commission calls them \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/law\/better-regulation\/have-your-say\/initiatives\/13119-Legislation-for-plants-produced-by-certain-new-genomic-techniques_en\">plants produced by certain new genomic techniques<\/a>\u201d.<br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Commission\u2019s plan goes straight against the European Court of Justice. The <a href=\"https:\/\/curia.europa.eu\/jcms\/upload\/docs\/application\/pdf\/2018-07\/cp180111en.pdf\">EU\u2019s highest court has warned<\/a> that an exclusion of organisms engineered with new GM techniques from the scope of the EU\u2019s GMO regulations would defeat the purpose of the regulations. It would jeopardise the protection of people\u2019s health and threaten the environment.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; background:transparent; display:block;\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; background:transparent; display:block;\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-text-color has-greens-orange-color\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h4 class=\"has-text-color has-greens-orange-color\"><strong>How will weakening our GMO rules benefit big agricultural business?<\/strong><br><\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The European Commission\u2019s plan is a dream come true for Bayer\/Monsanto.<br><br>If the EU drops the requirement for GMO traceability and labelling, farmers, food producers and consumers would have no way to reject these GM products and opt for GM-free choices. It would threaten the future of organic farming, which must be GM-free by its own rulebook. <br><br>Moreover, armed with strong intellectual property rights and patents, big multinationals would be able to use these untraceable and unlabelled GM seeds to further entrench their control on our food production. The more patented GM seeds there are on the market, the harder it becomes for breeders to avoid contamination with GM seeds and to access unpatented non-GM seeds.&nbsp;<br><br>This may well be the real motivation behind the corporations\u2019 push for deregulation: they want to push out their competitors and take full control of the market.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter wp-block-image\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_image\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"858\" height=\"596\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2021-10-14-um-10.00.22.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2021-10-14-um-10.00.22.png 858w, https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2021-10-14-um-10.00.22-300x208.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2021-10-14-um-10.00.22-768x533.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; background:transparent; display:block;\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-text-color has-greens-orange-color\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h4 class=\"has-text-color has-greens-orange-color\"><strong>Misleading arguments: why does the European Commission want certain GMOs to be deregulated?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Drawing from the rhetoric of the big agricultural corporations, the European Commission is using three main arguments to defend their proposed changes to our GMO rules: <br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_list\">\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><li><strong>that there are supposed \u201csustainability benefits\u201d<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>that these new GMOs are genetically similar to non-GM plants, and&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>that it is too difficult to apply the current GMO laws.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter \" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p>&nbsp; <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter wp-block-image\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_image\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"550\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2021-10-14-um-10.03.37-1024x550.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2021-10-14-um-10.03.37-1024x550.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2021-10-14-um-10.03.37-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2021-10-14-um-10.03.37-768x413.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2021-10-14-um-10.03.37.png 1202w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Here is why all three of these arguments are baseless:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; background:transparent; display:block;\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-text-color has-greens-orange-color\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h4 class=\"has-text-color has-greens-orange-color\"><strong>(1) New GMOs are not sustainable and will not lead to less pesticide use&nbsp;<\/strong><br><\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The European Commission claims that plants engineered with new GM techniques can <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_21_1985\">\u201ccontribute to a more sustainable food system\u201d<\/a>. Supposedly, plants will be genetically modified to resist diseases, for example, which would allow farmers to reduce the use of chemical pesticides.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">What the Commission is ignoring is that new GM technology is already in the hands of a few multinational companies, like Bayer\/Monsanto and Corteva. By the end of 2020, these two companies alone had filed around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.testbiotech.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Patents_on%20new%20GE.pdf\">120 international patent applications<\/a> for seed products engineered with gene editing techniques.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Big agricultural corporations all produce both seeds and chemical pesticides. Why would they use GM technology to reduce farmers\u2019 dependency on chemicals? In fact, they have made the same promise before &#8211; and never delivered.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Today, the vast majority of genetically modified crops are engineered to withstand spraying with toxic herbicides, which are sold in a package together with these GM seeds. The first ever gene edited GM crop to hit the market &#8211; Cibus\u2019 SU Canola, grown in the US since 2014 &#8211; is one of these herbicide-tolerant plants. <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>And, many plants engineered with new GM techniques that are in the <a href=\"https:\/\/datam.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/datam\/mashup\/NEW_GENOMIC_TECHNIQUES\/index.html\">\u201cpre-commercial stage\u201d<\/a> are also tolerant to herbicides, according to the Commission\u2019s own research.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Genetically modified crops that resist diseases may be under research in some public laboratories. But, there are no signs that they will work in the field and that they will be effectively commercialised &#8211; not in Europe, and not in countries with more permissive GM regulatory regimes. <br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; background:transparent; display:block;\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-text-color has-greens-orange-color\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h4 class=\"has-text-color has-greens-orange-color\"><strong>(2) Creating GMOs is not the same as evolution. These genetic changes do not occur in nature.<\/strong><br><\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The European Commission argues that these genetically modified plants are too similar to non-GM plants to justify their regulation under GMO laws.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">However, even if no \u2018foreign\u2019 genetic material remains in the GM organism, the laboratory processes used in GM are bound to result in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.testbiotech.org\/en\/content\/why-new-ge-needs-be-regulated\">changes that do not occur in nature<\/a>. Developers use new GM technology to achieve complex genetic alterations that would not be possible without genetic engineering. What\u2019s more, they are far from controlling all the changes resulting from the engineering process. Both the intended and unintended changes to the genetic make-up of plants can lead to risks affecting ecosystems and food production.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/en\/article\/document\/genome-edited-plants-in-the-eu\">scientists have argued<\/a> that the risks linked to new GM techniques may well be similar, or even greater, than existing GM methods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; background:transparent; display:block;\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-text-color has-greens-orange-color\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h4 class=\"has-text-color has-greens-orange-color\"><strong>(3) Enforcing the EU\u2019s GMO regulations requires a commitment to global cooperation, not global corporations<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The European Commission believes the EU\u2019s existing GMO regulations are too difficult to enforce because we cannot track down all the genetically modified products that may enter the EU illegally (i.e. without GMO authorisation). This is indeed a problem that needs to be solved, and the only way to solve it is through research efforts and global cooperation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">So far, the Commission has done neither. EU scientists have engaged in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/gmo-crl.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/doc\/JRC116289-GE-report-ENGL.pdf\">theoretical considerations<\/a>\u201d about how to detect, identify and quantify gene-edited products, without any experimental evidence. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2073-4395\/11\/1\/61\/htm\">Recommendations by scientists<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/system\/files\/2021-04\/gmo_mod-bio_stake-cons_ms-reply-deu.pdf\">German authorities<\/a> to establish an international database of new GM products are yet to be followed.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The EU cannot bow down before the secrecy of seed producers who are evidently able to track their own patented products but don\u2019t want public authorities to be able to do the same.<br><br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter wp-block-image\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_image\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"518\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2021-10-14-um-10.08.44-1024x518.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2021-10-14-um-10.08.44-1024x518.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2021-10-14-um-10.08.44-300x152.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2021-10-14-um-10.08.44-768x389.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2021-10-14-um-10.08.44.png 1474w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter wp-block-separator\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_separator\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-text-color has-greens-orange-color\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h4 class=\"has-text-color has-greens-orange-color\"><strong>Let\u2019s get down to real progress. What future does the Greens\/EFA Group want for our global food production?<\/strong><br><\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As Greens\/EFA MEPs, we cannot accept any weakening of the EU\u2019s food and environmental standards. We need to demand more, not less, from big agricultural corporations, and cannot exempt them from regulatory oversight. It is the EU\u2019s responsibility to stand up for our climate, for our food production, for public health and for nature.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We maintain that GM plants have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/new-gm-technology-has-no-place-in-sustainable-farming\/\">no place in sustainable farming<\/a>. Only farmer-based agro-ecology can provide abundant harvests that are resilient in the face of climate change and do not depend on synthetic pesticides.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Let\u2019s not waste any time discussing false solutions promoted by agribusinesses. Instead of changing the EU GMO regulations to circumvent a landmark EU court ruling, let\u2019s get down to the real advances needed to expand ecological farming practices that work with, not against nature. <br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; background:transparent; display:block;\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:10px; background:transparent; display:block;\"
