How can we prevent feedback loops, where our environmental destruction sparks a chain of events that spirals out of our control? (For example, when global warming causes the Arctic permafrost to melt and releases huge quantities of methane into the atmosphere, thereby causing more global warming). How can we implement binding carbon budgets, where industries will be forced to limit their carbon emissions over time so that our climate is not overwhelmed?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Climate balance is not seen as a priority, whereas it should be the baseline. Prevention is the best medicine. If we don\u2019t protect the delicate balance of our world,&nbsp;&nbsp;we have no chance of building an economic and social system that can fight the climate crisis. We have no chance reaching our Paris Agreement climate goals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Instead, a lot of politicians are pinning all their hopes on future \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/sites\/default\/files\/resource\/28_EASAC%20Report%20on%20Negative%20Emission%20Technologies.pdf\">carbon negative technologies<\/a>\u201d that are absolutely nowhere near in sight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">These&nbsp;carbon negative technologies&nbsp;would be able to remove CO2 from the air on a huge scale. This is necessary to compensate for all the future planned emissions when we completely overshoot our targets. Currently, the world\u2019s planned GHG emissions need to be 32 gigatonnes lower in order for us to meet our Paris Agreement goal to limit global warming to 1.5\u00b0C. But, every year, the gap (called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/resources\/emissions-gap-report-2019\">the Emissions Gap<\/a>) between what we need to achieve and what countries plan to achieve just keeps getting bigger. Just think about that for a moment. Right now, our governments are literally planning to fail.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Unless we take urgent action, we\u2019re on track to fail spectacularly. We are going need an awful lot of technology to extract all the extra greenhouse gasses if we want to prevent climate catastrophes and extremely dangerous living conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Luckily for us, we already have this technology. They are called \u2018trees\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter \" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h4><strong>How can trees help fight climate change?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trees are literally the lungs of the earth. They act as a \u2018carbon sink\u2019 absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and turning it into oxygen. After oceans, our forests are the world\u2019s largest carbon sinks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Over a billion people call them home: living in and around forests, completely dependent on them for food, water and medicines. But no matter where you live &#8211; city, town or country &#8211; we\u2019re all reliant on the resources of the forest. Have you had a cup of coffee today? Used a pencil to write a shopping list? Read the newspaper? The riches of the forest are all around us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">They\u2019re also the reason our biodiversity is even slightly surviving. They are home to 80% of the world\u2019s terrestrial biodiversity (animals, plants and microorganisms that live on land).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/experts\/jake-schmidt\/new-nasa-map-shows-how-much-carbon-stored-global-forests-what-risk-if-we-dont\">map from NASA<\/a>&nbsp;shows how much carbon is stored in forests worldwide, and, as you can see, it speaks for itself.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; background:transparent; display:block;\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter wp-block-image\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_image\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/NASA-Map-of-Global-Carbon-in-Forests.png\" alt=\"NASA Map of Global Carbon in Forests\" class=\"wp-image-4607\" width=\"578\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/NASA-Map-of-Global-Carbon-in-Forests.png 578w, https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/NASA-Map-of-Global-Carbon-in-Forests-300x140.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><figcaption>NASA Map of Global Carbon in Forests<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Our forests need to be preserved. We are destroying one of our most efficient solutions in the fight against climate change. And if we don\u2019t take urgent action to reverse the situation, it will get even worse. In 2019, due to extreme heat waves caused by climate change, the tropics lost approximately&nbsp;<em>12 million hectares of tree cover<\/em>&nbsp;(according to a team led by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2019\/12\/2019-the-year-rainforests-burned\/#:~:text=Global%20forests,-A%20team%20led&amp;text=According%20to%20the%20data%2C%20the,carbon%2Ddense%20type%20of%20forest\">Matt Hansen of the University of Maryland<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This is the size of Belgium.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\t<div data-cont class=\"\">\n\t\t\n\t<div class=\"vph pat_0 z10\">\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"z5 pat_0 vph bg-topic \" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pexels-pok-rie-1268068.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\n\n\t\t<\/div><div class=\"vph\"><\/div>\n\n\t\t\n\t<\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; background:transparent; display:block;\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter \" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h4><strong>What\u2019s the root of the problem?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Deforestation globally is worsening every year. The biggest reason for this is human activity: agricultural expansion, mining, oil extraction and infrastructure development. Yes, we are consciously and purposefully destroying our own lungs. As climate change gains momentum, heatwaves and forest fires burn down our forests at a record pace. But when trees catch fire, the carbon they have stored throughout the years releases again in the atmosphere which increases greenhouse gasses even more, causing more heat waves, forest fires and deforestation. It\u2019s a vicious cycle and also the reason why there should be an immediate halt on human-made deforestation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">When a forest is gone, it\u2019s also an entire ecosystem that falls apart. This has consequences for all of us. Soon, huge forests like the Amazon rainforest will turn into savannahs. This will be a tipping point for climate change to become irreversible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We need our governments and politicians to take this seriously. We were all struck by the calamitous images of the Amazon rainforest burning earlier this year and there was public outcry. But sadly, as usual, we saw insufficient political action. It\u2019s not enough for our leaders and change-makers to be concerned, make speeches and send good wishes to the Amazon. We need structural change. We need to prioritise reforestation as a matter of urgency.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\t<div data-cont class=\"\">\n\t\t\n\t<div class=\"vpw pat_0 z10\">\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"z5 pat_0 vpw bg-topic \"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/sara-kurfess-Q3CO1ZOZ6ZI-unsplash.jpg\"><\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\n\n\t\t<\/div><div class=\"vpw\"><\/div>\n\n\t\t\n\t<\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; background:transparent; display:block;\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter \" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h4><strong>What \u201cwood\u201d the EU do?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">According to the Confederation of European forest owners, the \u2018EU has no legal competence in forestry policy and hence there is no common EU forestry policy.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">However, it\u2019s clear that a lot of other sectors do cover policies directly linked to forests: environment and climate policies, energy, agriculture and trade, to name just a few. Unfortunately, most of these policies &#8211; like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/the-mercosur-trade-agreement-a-lose-lose-deal\/\">the Mercosur Trade Agreement<\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; contradict good forestry policy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Even the Common Agricultural Policy, which consists of 30% of the EU budget, is more likely to increase deforestation than stop it. According to FERN, a European NGO dedicated to protecting forests and people, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fern.org\/publications-insight\/drawing-out-links-between-the-common-agricultural-policy-soy-and-deforestation-in-south-america-261\/\">soy we import from South America<\/a>&nbsp;fuels large-scale deforestation. Much of it is illegal.&nbsp;&nbsp;Also, the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/state-of-forests\/en\/\">Food and Agriculture Organization<\/a>&nbsp;of the United Nations has stated that:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter wp-block-quote is-style-large\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_quote\">\n<blockquote style=\"text-align:left\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large\"><p><em>\u201cLarge-scale commercial agriculture (primarily cattle ranching and cultivation of soya bean and oil palm) accounted for 40 percent of tropical deforestation between 2000 and 2010, and local subsistence agriculture for another 33 percent.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">However, all is not lost. On 23 July 2019, the European Commission adopted an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?qid=1565272554103&amp;uri=CELEX:52019DC0352\">EU Communication on Stepping up EU Action to Protect and Restore the World\u2019s Forests<\/a>, with the objective to reduce the carbon footprint of EU consumption and invest in more sustainable land-use practices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">According to several NGOs, like Greenpeace, the only way to stop the destruction of forests caused by the EU is to adopt an EU law to ensure that no products can come into the EU that drive deforestation, ecosystem destruction or human rights abuses.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Another great piece of news is that this month (October, 2020), the European Parliament took a huge step forward by adopting a legislative&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/A-9-2020-0179_EN.pdf\">report<\/a>&nbsp;on tackling EU-driven deforestation. The international NGO, Global Witness,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/en\/press-releases\/global-witness-welcomes-landmark-report-from-european-parliament-on-tackling-eus-role-in-global-deforestation\/\">reviewed the report<\/a>&nbsp;and is very positive about it. They say that it sets out a clear blueprint to halve and reverse EU-driven deforestations. The report also calls for access to remedies to affected communities to help protect human rights and the environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This is something to celebrate! Let\u2019s push the EU to adopt more of these initiatives. Let\u2019s communicate about them.&nbsp;&nbsp;Let\u2019s boycott all products leading to forest destruction. Let\u2019s tell our European parliamentarians that we expect more from them than contradictory policies that cause deforestation around the world and inside of the EU. What Europe is doing inside our borders is also affecting forests outside our borders. It\u2019s time we took responsibility.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\t<div data-cont class=\"\">\n\t\t\n\t<div class=\"vph pat_0 z10\">\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"z5 pat_0 vph bg-topic \" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pexels-felix-mittermeier-957024.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\n\n\t\t<\/div><div class=\"vph\"><\/div>\n\n\t\t\n\t<\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; background:transparent; display:block;\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter \" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_heading\">\n<h4><strong>Turning over a new leaf<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We know how frustrating it is as an activist facing these huge global issues and being lost when it comes to \u2018what we can do about it\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This is why &#8211; to end this blog &#8211; we\u2019ve listed some initiatives that need&nbsp;<strong>your help<\/strong>&nbsp;to halt deforestation!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.treeswaterpeople.org\/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpviG4O3C7AIVCLrtCh0wEw6pEAAYAiAAEgKDIfD_BwE\"><strong>Trees, water and people<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Their reforestation programs focus on establishing and maintaining tree nurseries, educating communities about the positive environmental impacts of reforestation and strengthening economic development. They work with existing local groups, schools, and communities in extremely low-income rural and peri-urban areas to provide guidance on how to plant, graft, and maintain their trees. It\u2019s very easy to get involved via their website as an intern, a volunteer or a donor! Check it out!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reforestaction.com\/en\/blog\/amazon-emergency-reforestation-action\"><strong>Reforest\u2019Action<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Working under the #ReforestAmazonia, Reforest\u2019Action reduces deforestation and restores forests degraded by burning in Rond\u00f4nia State, the most affected by deforestation in the Amazon. You can help by planting trees online!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenbeltmovement.org\/\"><strong>The Green Belt<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Green Belt Movement has planted over 51 million trees in Kenya. They work at the grassroots, national, and international levels to promote environmental conservation, build climate resilience and empower communities, especially women and girls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter \" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_html\">\n<link href=\"https:\/\/actionnetwork.org\/css\/style-embed-v3.css\" rel=\"stylesheet\" type=\"text\/css\"><script src=\"https:\/\/actionnetwork.org\/widgets\/v3\/form\/sign-up-for-more-information-on-our-climate-campaign?format=js&amp;source=widget\"><\/script><div id=\"can-form-area-sign-up-for-more-information-on-our-climate-campaign\" style=\"width: 100%\"><!-- this div is the target for our HTML insertion --><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px; We went on strike for weeks and weeks, for more than a year. We worked together with scientists, politicians and activists. We recently sailed to Latin America to attend the CoP in Chile and to understand the threat to the Amazon Rainforest and the Global South facing the direct consequences of climate change.<br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">After this, we felt like it was time for our activism to evolve and for us to get closer to the decision making process at the European level. We started an internship in the Greens\/EFA Group in February 2020 and decided to write a regular blog to share information on the preparation of the European Green Deal within the Parliament.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gouter has-medium-font-size\" style=\"\"><div class=\"greens-content blk_core_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We want to build the bridge between the climate activists in the streets and the politicians in the European Parliament.
