After long negotiations, the compromise climate target in the EU Climate Law amounts to a reduction of 52.8% in emissions which simply will not meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. We need bold reduction targets to stop the climate crisis. There is no time to lose to slow down global warming significantly. We can\u2019t endorse a climate law that breaks all our climate promises, writes Micha Bloss, Greens\/EFA MEP<\/a><\/strong> and Greens\/EFA negotiator on the European Climate Law.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

The\nGreens\/EFA Group has been leading the call for an EU-wide law for the climate.\nWe wanted a law that would put into legislation the tools and the <\/a>goals<\/a> we need to <\/a>implement<\/a> the Paris Climate\nAgreement<\/a>. Thousands of activists have been mobilised. Young people\nhave been protesting on the streets. NGOs and climate scientists have issued\nurgent warnings about heat waves, droughts, floods, forest fires, water\nshortages and species loss. We have been the loudest voice in the European\nParliament calling for a consistent reduction in emissions. We wanted a law to\nback us up.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

After\nmonths of negotiations, I\u2019m sad to say that the European Climate Law is simply\nnot enough to limit global temperature rise to 2\u00b0C, let alone the 1.5\u00b0C that\nclimate scientists say we need to achieve. Watered down by the fossil fuel\nlobby and EU governments, this climate law is not aligned with science or with\nthe goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. What\u2019s on the table now are\nhalf-measures and broken promises. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n
