EU Commission should suspend GMO authorisations

Press Release from Plaid Cymru MEP Jill Evans

The EU Commission should immediately suspend the authorisation, cultivation and import of GMOs according to Plaid MEP Jill Evans. The long-standing anti-GM campaigner made the call after the results of new scientific research became known.

A new toxicological study by Professor Seralini at Caen University has shown a disturbingly high death rate amongst rats fed with GM over a long period. Tests were carried out on a sample of two hundred rats over a period of two years.

Commenting, the Plaid MEP said:

"This new study shows that we are right to be concerned about the possible risks of GMO feed. The European Commission should suspend authorisation and import of GM maize and corn.

"We need to see national food safety authorities and the EU Food Safety Agency undertake independent, publicly funded studies to ensure that we are able to enjoy a safe and healthy diet."

Ms Evans and colleagues in the European Parliament have specifically called on the European Commission to suspend the authorisation of corn variety MON 810 by Monsanto and of the BASF Amflora potato, as well as authorisation for the import of GM maize and soya.
