European Semester Winter Package

Quote from Sven Giegold MEP

The European Commission's has just published its European Semester 'winter package', which upgrades Greece's macroeconomic inequalities to "excessive", but leaves Germany with its previous assessment.

Sven Giegold, Greens/EFA economic affairs spokesperson, comments:

"It is a bad joke that the European Commission is criticising Greece while at the same time turning a blind eye to Germany. There is no question that there are problems in Greece, but the stability of the Eurozone is also threatened by Germany’s continuing export surpluses. It is politically cowardly that the Commission now declares the imbalances in Greece as excessive but does not dare to do the same with German surpluses. This in no way corresponds to the principle of equality of all member states before European law."
