JEFTA imports old mistakes

EU-Japan Free Trade Agreement

The Japan-EU Free Trade Agreement (JEFTA) between the European Union and Japan does not represent a forward-looking and sustainable trade policy, which is why the Greens/EFA Group have voted against it in the European Parliament today.

EU-Japan Agreement

Preliminary Review on behalf of the Green/EFA Trade Working Group

The EU-Japan deal will be publicly presented as a symbol of an open, liberal trade regime, in contrast with the protectionist measures taking place in the US and elsewhere. The attack on the rules-based international trading system makes it all the more important for the EU to embed its’ values and live up to its commitments for sustainability and ecological responsibility in the agreements it signs. Based on the following analysis, we conclude that the EU-Japan agreement is another missed opportunity to fulfil this often-cited mantra.

An agreement that perpetuates mistakes

EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (JEFTA)

Tomorrow (17/07/2018), the EU and Japan will sign the biggest bilateral trade deal in history, covering almost one third of global GDP with implications for over 600 million people. Once ratified, JEFTA will be incredibly difficult to amend.

The European Parliament has today given consent to the reforms to the electoral law of the European Union. The reforms introduce an obligatory threshold of 2 to 5 % for constituencies with more than 35 seats (impacting only Spain and Germany).

Trump's solo run is a dangerous game with fire

Iran agreement

The US President announced today to impose economic sanctions on Iran which means the US is withdrawing from the Iran Agreement. The agreement was concluded in 2015 between Iran, the United States, the European Union, Russia and China to suspend Iran's nuclear programme and the enrichment of uranium and plutonium and to prevent Iran from producing weapons-grade uranium or plutonium. In return, economic sanctions against Iran were lifted.

European Parliament agrees stricter rules for dual-use technology exports

No more spyware for dictators

"The European Parliament has delivered on its promise to strengthen the EU's human rights policy by making exports of surveillance technology stricter", comments Greens/EFA rapporteur Klaus Buchner.

No spyware for dictators: stricter rules for dual-use exports

Briefing on the recast of the "Control of exports, transfer, brokering, technical assistance and transit of dual-use items"

On 17 January 2018, the European Parliament will vote on its position for the recast of the "Control of exports, transfer, brokering, technical assistance and transit of dual-use items", from Greens/EFA rapporteur Klaus Buchner. Dual-use items can be used for military as well as for civilian purposes, including drones, high performance computers and some chemicals. About 10% of EU exports fall under dual use. This recast introduces the possibility to control exports of cyber-surveillance items on human rights grounds. With warfare increasingly built on dual-use technology, this is a much needed reform.
