EU must support victims of Moria fire

Refugees

European politicians cannot turn a blind eye to the situation in Greece, Italy and other countries hosting large numbers of people simply because they fear a far-right backlash. Essential medical assistance and care must be provided to survivors of the fire and anyone infected with the Coronavirus. The EU has a responsibility to act and to leave no one behind.

Greens/EFA Proposal for a Fair and Efficient Asylum System in Europe

New Paper

In view of the European Commission’s upcoming proposal for a new Pact on Migration and Asylum, the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament has just released a "Proposal for a fair and efficient asylum system in Europe.” This paper calls for increased support for the willingness of cities and municipalities to receive refugees and asylum seekers, a fair distribution of refugees and asylum seekers in the European Union, and compulsory compensation payments from EU governments that refuse European solidarity.

Reports of shooting incident by Greek border guards must not go unanswered

Greek border/Migration

Using violence against people who are seeking help is not only a brutal violation of fundamental rights, but it is also the very antithesis of what the EU is about. The Greek government, Frontex and the European Commission must clarify exactly what happened and outline what steps they will take to ensure that force is not used against innocent people.

Europe must protect human rights and the rule of law

Situation on the Greece-Turkey border

"It is shameful that refugees are beaten away at European borders with batons and tear gas and when the Greek military conjures up civil war-like scenes against refugees," comments Greens/EFA co-president Ska Keller.

Time to put an end to the humanitarian crisis on the Greek islands

Time to take responsibility

At the next European Council on 2-3 December, our government leaders have the opportunity to solve a humanitarian crisis, which has long reached its critical limit. This is why we have sent them a letter calling them to immediately improve the living conditions and relocate asylum seekers to other member states. You can also take action.

Policing humanitarianism and human rights defenders

Civil society organisations are increasingly under pressure in Europe. NGOs engaged in helping refugees as well as human rights defenders fighting against rule of law backsliding are criminalised, intimidated and charged with legal restrictions. The conference will address how the criminalisation affects the rights of citizens and discuss ways to protect NGOs and human rights defenders.
