Final Council agreement on the combustion engine phase out

"The end of the internal combustion engine is confirmed. Finally, the reckless blockade ends, along with the future of the combustion engine. The compromise, which was reached months ago, is clear: in 2035 we will definitely move on from polluting cars to zero-emission transport only." said Co-Presidents of the Greens/EFA Group

Postponement of the vote on combustion engine phase-out

On 6th March, the vote on the end of the combustion engine was postponed again by the Presidency of the Council. "The phasing out of the combustion engine must not fail because the policies of governments such as Germany, Poland and Italy are being driven by car industry lobbyists", Bas Eickhout MEP comments.

Greens/EFA Group welcome Commission proposals on road safety, call for an EU-wide speed limit

The Greens/EFA in the European Parliament welcome the road safety package proposed by the EU Commission today and call for a legislative proposal for a speed limit, as has long been common practice in all other EU Member States except Germany.

MEPs vote to end combustion engine by 2035

The automotive sector can, and should be one of the fastest sectors to decarbonise. The solutions are there and manufacturers are already racing to invest. The industry needs certainty. The European Parliament has shown clear support for the car industry to go fully electric by 2035.

How did the car industry manage to undermine EU pollution limits?

Despite an EU law limiting the amount of pollution that cars could emit, the car industry - together with complicit EU governments - managed not only to delay the implementation of the rules, but to insert massive loopholes that essentially rendered the new pollution limits meaningless.
