EU needs to follow through on promises for global agreement on phase out of fossil fuels

COP30

Today, at a press conference at the UN Climate Change Conference, European Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra reaffirmed the EU’s commitment, made in Dubai, to support a global agreement on the transition away from fossil fuels.

Bas Eickhout MEP, Greens/EFA President and member of the European Parliament delegation to COP30, comments:

“Wopke Hoesktra could have been a little clearer just now, but it’s obvious that Europe can support a roadmap on transitioning away from fossil and that we have momentum.

"Now that the EU officially supports such a roadmap it's time to use its diplomatic clout to build bridges and reach out to other countries. The EU must support the Brazilian presidency in finding an agreement on a global phase out of fossil fuels during this COP.

“Now, Europe needs to live up to its promises on climate adaptation financing within the agreements made last year. Tripling climate adaptation financing should be agreeable across Europe. The EU must lead the way and show its commitment to climate justice."
