Yesterday, the Romanian magistrate Laura Codruta Kovesi, one of the candidates to become the EU's first public prosecutor, was indicted on corruption charges by the newly formed "Unit for Inquiry of Magistates". She is forbidden to leave the country or to talk to the media. Please find below a quote of Ska Keller, President of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament and lead candidate of the European Greens for the European elections:
"It seems extremely dubious that a newly formed judicial unit that is directly controlled by the government accuses Laura Kovesi of corruption. The establishment of this particular unit goes against the separation of powers and rule of law as stated by the Venice Commission. We urge the Romanian government to allow independent investigation and full transparency on Kovesi's case. Banning her from talking to the media is totally disproportional.
Kovesi is still the official candidate of the European Parliament for the public prosecutor's office and we continue to support her in accordance with the presumption of innocence.
The situation in Romania is still extremely worrying and we will continue to monitor it closely."
