How the richest man in Russia became its most famous prisoner

First screening after the Berlin Festival


The Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament is pleased to invite you to the first screening of the film about the former owner of Yukos Oil, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, which was premiered as the sensation of the Berlin International Film Festival 2011.

The film tells the drama of Khodorkovsky's Odyssey, all the way from a socialist believer to a perfect capitalist and subsequently becoming the most known Russian prisoner...

The projection (17:30-19:30) will be followed by a debate (19:30-20:30) in the presence of the film director, Mr. Cyril Tuschi, and members of the Khodorkovsky’s legal defence team : Mr. Anton Drel, Head of Khodorkovsky's legal defense team, Mrs. Karinna Moskalenko, Member of Khodorkovsky's legal defence team and director of the International Protection Center and Mrs. Maria Petina Logan, Member of Khodorkovsky's legal defence team.

Synopsis of the film

A documentary on the transformation of Mikhail Khodorkovsky - from a perfect socialist to a perfect capitalist and finally, in a Siberian prison, becoming a perfect martyr. Khodorkovky - the richest Russian, challenges President Putin. A fight of the titans begins. Putin warns him. But Khodorkovsky comes back to Russia - knowing that he will be imprisoned, once he returns. Why didn't Khodorkovsky stay in Exile with a couple of billions? Why did he come back? Why did he do that? A personal journey to Khodorkovsky.


About the guest speakers:

Cyril Tuschi was born in 1969 in Frankfurt. After studies in Philosophy in the United States in the late 1980s, he opened a nightclub and worked at the state theatre Stuttgart. In 1992, his first short film, Frankfurt at the Seaside (Frankfurt am Meer) was invited to several festivals in Germany. He then enrolled at the Film Academy Baden-Wuerttemberg. His other films include: Nightland (Nachtland, 1995) a Kafkaadaptation- which was screened in Berlin and won the New York Academy Camera Prize in 1996, Turn (1997) and after several Music promos, he debuted with the road movie feature "Slight Changes in Temperature and Mind" (SommerHundeSoehne, 2004, which won the audience award at the film festival of the German film – Ludwigshafen. Now Tuschi focuses with his company LALA FILMS on script development and international co-productions.

Anton Drel - Head of Khodorkovsky's legal defense team -  has served as Mr. Khodorkovsky's lawyer and representative since 2000. Drel was the first Russian lawyer to meet Mr. Khodorkovsky in jail after his arrest in October 2003. In 1992, Anton Drel graduated from the Moscow State University Law Department and was accepted into the Moscow City Bar Association. Drel began work as a lawyer at the law offices of Moscow Lawyers, followed by the offices of Heifetz, Binetzky, Heifetz until 1996. From 1996-2000, Drel worked at the law firm ALM-Feldmans. Drel represents Mr. Khodorkovsky both in Russia and at the European Court for Human Rights.

Karinna Moskalenko - Member of Khodorkovsky's legal defense team and director of the International Protection Center - Karinna Moskalenko is recognized internationally as one of Russia's most effective and courageous human rights lawyers. In awarding her its "2006 IHF Recognition Award", the International Helsinki Federation said "Karinna Moskalenko is among the most outstanding human rights lawyers in the world, who has helped scores of victims in Russia fight for their rights in court. Moskalenko currently represents Garry Kasparov and the families of Alexander Litvinenko and Anna Politkovskaya. Her caseload before the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) includes a wide variety of Russian human rights issues, ranging from torture and disappearances in Chechnya to victims of the Nordost Theatre siege in Moscow to the arrest and imprisonment of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the embattled former head of Russia's YUKOS Oil Co., who is now serving an eight year prison sentence in Siberia for what Moskalenko argues are purely political reasons. Moskalenko founded the International Protection Center in 1995 to protect the human rights of defendants in Russia.

Maria Petina Logan – Member of Khodorkovsky's legal defense team - has been involved in Khdorkovsky's case since 2003. Graduated St. Petersburg University, she received a masters degree in international legal studies from the American University in Washington D.C., and an MBA from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. Previously, she worked as an attorney at the international law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP.
