Greens welcome EU Commission decision to drop Guinea fisheries agreement

Yesterday, the European Commission announced that it will withdraw the proposal for a fisheries partnership agreement with Guinea, following the massacre of 28 September in the capital, Conakry. Swedish Green MEP Isabella Lövin, a member of the European Parliament fisheries committee that voted against the agreement on 1 October, commented:

"At last, the Commission has admitted that bilateral agreements between the European Union and third countries cannot come at any cost. This is the first time the EU has reacted so firmly, though there has been, tragically, no shortage of coups and massacres in the past. The Greens hope that there will now be an in depth discussion on the conditions and criteria for these agreements. We shall certainly be raising this in the Parliament's Fisheries Committee. The EU must obviously pay for fishing that has already occurred under the provisional application of this agreement."
