Historic: Canada answers Europe’s call for closer cooperation

Greens/EFA President Terry Reintke comments on Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's historic speech to the European Parliament:

“Europe has extended a hand, and Canada has taken it – this is a historic moment.

Whether it is Trump, the tech oligarchs or Putin, many powerful players are currently doing everything in their power to destroy the rules-based world order that guarantees our freedom and security in Europe.

They will fail in this endeavour. Europe is not powerless, Europe is strong, and together with Canada we can be even stronger, as Prime Minister Carney made clear today. This strength is not for the sake of dominance, but for mutual protection, so that the citizens of Europe and Canada can live in freedom and democracy and jointly defend the rules-based world order.

In times of global crisis, broad coalitions of genuine communities of values are more important than ever. Canada, under Prime Minister Mark Carney, is proving to be a deeply reliable, democratic partner for us Europeans.

Those who, out of fear of reprisals, succumb to paralysis and panic, capitulate to the tyrants and autocrats of this world. And that’s is not Europe’s way.”
