Forest Monitoring Law

The reactionary right buries the law to protect forests

The law to improve forest protection through an effective EU monitoring has just been rejected by a majority of MEPs.

The Forest Monitoring Law aimed to address the problem of heterogeneous and inconsistent information about the status of forests in the EU, their ecological, social and economic value, the pressures they face and ecosystem services they provide.

Pär Holmgren MEP, Greens/EFA shadow in the ENVI committee comments:

“Once again, the EPP has chosen to ally itself with the far right to kill a law that would have improved the scientific data on our forests and that would have been used to protect them and prevent, in particular, the increasingly frequent devastating wildfires.”

“Forests are not only important to the EU economy, but they are also central to the EU climate and biodiversity goals and to the welfare of citizens in a warming world.”

Nicolae STEFANUTA, Vice-President of the European Parliament and Greens/EFA shadow in the AGRI committee, comments:

“The decline of forest ecosystems is both a cause and a result of the severe wildfires of recent years.”

“Today, the reactionary right wing is depriving Europeans of a tool for monitoring better our forests, at a time when those forests are burning down, or dying from drought or diseases, and when illegal logging thrives in the shadows. The Forest Monitoring Law is a crucial tool to prevent further deforestation and protect Europe’s natural heritage.”
