Solidarity with the people in Ukraine – what we can do now to help

On February 24th Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with coordinated assaults throughout the country. This is an unprecedented attack against a European country. Against a democracy. Against peace in Europe.

It is now up to us to speak with a united and strong voice against this aggression.

The European Union stands united with Ukraine

We as Greens/EFA in the European Parliament strongly condemn these unprovoked actions by Russia and stand firmly with Ukraine. Ukraine’s sovereignty as a democratic nation and its territorial integrity are undisputable. Russia’s military actions are in direct violation of international law and should stop immediately.

It is now up to us, the European Union, to show our solidarity with Ukraine in a swift and coordinated response. We cannot let Putin succeed in his attempt to bring down Europe’s peace architecture. Given his continued escalation, further targeted and hard-hitting sanctions must be brought to bear immediately.

Our hearts go out to the people of Ukraine, who now face stark realities. We must strengthen our financial, economic and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and be prepared to provide a safe haven to people fleeing the invasion. All the above will test the resolve, unity and solidarity of the European Union. Collectively, we are convinced we have the means and the will to meet the challenge.
