He is part of the movement\u2019s #NotMyTaxonomy campaign and actions.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<h4 class=\"has-dark-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">The climate and biodiversity crises are interconnected<\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>We need to understand that we cannot solve one without the other.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Now businesses have found a way to link them in a way that does not serve either. They pretend they will stop harming the climate and help bring back nature, but are bound to fail on both accounts.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<h4 class=\"has-dark-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Protecting business as usual &#8211; how net zero pledges ignore science and nature<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Scientists trying to model a world in which our lives and economic system remain mostly unchanged yet produce no greenhouse gas emissions have found that some sectors will face real problems. They say not only must we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/2022\/04\/04\/ipcc-ar6-wgiii-pressrelease\/\">do as much as we can to reduce emissions, but we must also absorb and store emissions to get to net zero<\/a>. For the latter, nature is key. Peatlands, forests or seagrass beds &#8211; they are all so-called \u2018carbon sinks\u2019 (which naturally absorb carbon) and are crucial in the fight against the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>But, there is a problem. Global corporations have been more than happy to go down the net zero route. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foei.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/foei-double-jeopardy-full-report-EN-2.pdf\">From fossil fuel giants, like TotalEnergies, Shell and BP, to multi-million dollar corporations, like British Airways<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foei.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/foei-double-jeopardy-full-report-EN-2.pdf\">, Coca Cola and Nestl\u00e9,<\/a> a large number of businesses are making net zero emission commitments. Instead, they reckon that they can continue to cause more emissions and have them \u201coffset\u201d by others.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Their pledges divert attention from the need to radically reduce their emissions. And they also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foei.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/foei-double-jeopardy-full-report-EN-2.pdf\">\u201cmake the politics, violence, social and ecological destruction of fossil fuel burning and industrial farming invisible\u201d<\/a>, say Friends of the Earth.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>The companies want to look good without doing good. They want to continue hurting the climate whilst telling us that they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<h4 class=\"has-dark-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>The carbon offset scam <\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>The \u2018carbon offset credits\u2019 these companies rely on can be generated in two ways. They either come from projects that aim to \u201cprevent, avoid or reduce emissions\u201d, or from projects that aim to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. So far, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbon-direct.com\/insights\/assessing-the-state-of-the-voluntary-carbon-market-in-2022\">most projects fall under the category of \u2018avoided emissions<\/a>\u2019, such as \u2018avoided deforestation\u2019. It\u2019s simple &#8211; a forest that could be cut down will not be cut down, or so project developers claim. And somehow this counts as saving carbon emissions! What\u2019s more, the carbon savings from such projects are usually exaggerated.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p><em>Carbon Offsets: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Carbon Offsets: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6p8zAbFKpW0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>A few years ago, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) was already stating that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/carbon-offsets-are-not-our-get-out-jail-free-card\">\u201ccarbon offsets have been used by polluters as a free pass for inaction\u201d<\/a>, adding that such offsets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/carbon-offsets-are-not-our-get-out-jail-free-card\">\u201crisk giving the dangerous illusion of a \u2018fix\u2019 that will allow our billowing emissions to just continue to grow\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Environmental NGOs, like Greenpeace, have called carbon offsets a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/50689\/carbon-offsets-net-zero-greenwashing-scam\/\">scam<\/a>\u201d, demanding #realzero instead. Greenpeace has made it clear that we need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/48180\/why-net-zero-offsets-wont-solve-climate-crisis\/\">reduce emissions and protect nature<\/a> to prevent a climate breakdown &#8211; and they are right. There is no time for offsets!<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Now, the European Commission has released the so-called Carbon Removals Certification framework, which has been harshly criticised by the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) as a proposal that \u201cfalls woefully short of what is needed\u201d. Conservation organisations like The Nature Conservancy partner with corporations like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org\/en-us\/about-us\/who-we-are\/how-we-work\/working-with-companies\/companies-investing-in-nature1\/\">Shell, Cargill and Syngenta<\/a> to develop such \u201cnature-based solutions\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>The finance industry sees \u201cnature-based solutions\u201d as a huge opportunity. It estimates the potential market value to be 3.3 trillion dollars, seeing \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foei.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/foei-double-jeopardy-full-report-EN-2.pdf\">enormous new opportunities for both project developers and investors\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong. We need to preserve and restore ecosystems where possible. Healthy ecosystems that function as carbon sinks like peatlands, tidal flats or seagrass beds are essential for a stable climate on this planet. But the way \u201cnature-based\u201d carbon removals work currently could have massive negative effects on ecosystems, food security and people\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<h4 class=\"has-dark-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Why can\u2019t we just plant trees to fight climate change?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Most projected \u201cnature-based\u201d carbon removals, promoted by The Nature Conservancy and others, are supposed to come from reforestation, mainly in the Global South.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>That sounds like an attractive proposition. Everybody loves trees. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/05\/climate\/nyt-climate-newsletter-trillion-trees.html\">Donald Trump wants to plant a trillion trees<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/05\/climate\/nyt-climate-newsletter-trillion-trees.html\">.<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/climate-environment\/infographic\/eus-3-billion-trees-by-2030-goal-where-we-stand\/\">The EU only wants 3 billion (and has achieved 1% of that).<\/a> And I guess Elon Musk wants to plant trees on Mars\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>But, it is not that simple. A forest is a highly complex and interlinked ecosystem. It consists of a broad community of organisms like various kinds of fungi, lichen, shrubs, insects, mammals and even specific bacteria, which are actually responsible for that familiar earthy forest smell. It takes decades and specific environmental conditions for these exact conditions to establish. Only this way can a forest function in a holistic way and become a proper carbon sink.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>With climate change, environmental conditions become unpredictable. Areas that have favourable conditions for a certain species today might not have them anymore in 10 to 20 years. There is no guarantee that a newly planted tree will survive.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/full\/10.1098\/rstb.2021.0090\">study<\/a> has found that about half of the planted trees in tropical and sub-tropical forest restoration efforts did not survive more than five years. The researchers concluded that \u201cplanting for restoration is potentially rewarding but risky and context-dependent.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<h4 class=\"has-dark-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>You can plant trees, not forests<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>But it gets worse. In most cases, tree planting will create a plantation made up of a single tree species &#8211; not forests. The UN says that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yJX1Te0jey0\">almost half of reforested areas around the world are monocultures<\/a> used to produce wood.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>A forest is not just trees. Whilst natural forests have high levels of biodiversity and a large ability to absorb and store carbon, plantations do not have that. You can only plant trees, not forests. The word reforestation is misleading, as its outcome is not necessarily a forest.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Planting trees can even have adverse effects. Invasive species, like the eucalyptus tree, have been introduced throughout the world and are outcompeting native species. Eucalyptus reduces the water available to other plants as its roots grow very deep, lowering the groundwater level. This has a negative effect on the ecosystem composition, leading to lower biodiversity.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Yet, this is exactly what is happening in Brazil where Suzano, a pulp and paper company, plants fast-growing eucalyptus to increase wood yields and claims <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2021\/12\/brazils-suzano-boasts-its-pulpwood-plantations-are-green-critics-disagree\/\">its operations remove carbon from the atmosphere<\/a>. The company has even applied for &#8211; and received &#8211; a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainforest-rescue.org\/petitions\/1254\/brazil-stop-genetically-modified-eucalyptus-trees\">licence to plant genetically modified eucalyptus trees that are resistant to the herbicide glyphosate<\/a>. But these plantations are not forests. From an ecological perspective, they are green deserts without biodiversity.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<h4 class=\"has-dark-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong>There is not enough land<\/strong> to offset the carbon we produce<\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Proponents of \u201cnature-based solutions\u201d say we should reforest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.1710465114\">no less than 678 million hectares of land<\/a>, approximately the size of Brazil or Australia.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Where should we plant a million, a billion or even a trillion trees? In your backyard?<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Essentially that would not be in the Global North where land is expensive and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2022\/mar\/05\/tree-planting-drive-scottish-highlands-risks-widening-inequality\"> planting trees would drive prices further up<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2022\/mar\/05\/tree-planting-drive-scottish-highlands-risks-widening-inequality\">.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Most of these measures would happen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrm.org.uy\/NBS-miraculous-weapon-save-climate-or-final-solution-forests\">in the Global South<\/a>, in the regions most affected by the climate crisis, putting pressure on the land available. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.landgap.org\/\">Scientists<\/a> and environmental NGOs such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.uk\/challenges\/environmental-justice\/race-environmental-emergency-report\/\">Greenpeace<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foei.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Nature-based-solutions_a-wolf-in-sheeps-clothing.pdf.\">Friends of the Earth International<\/a> agree that nature-based carbon removals in these areas will exacerbate negative impacts on livelihoods, land rights, food production and ecosystems. These are most resilient in the face of climate change, show high levels of biodiversity and have large carbon binding as well as storage abilities. This goes for forests and other ecosystems that function as carbon sinks, like peatlands, tidal flats or seagrass beds.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Indigenous and local communities are key to this process. They guard against deforestation and conserve biodiversity while sustainably producing food for their communities. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/articles\/deep-dive\/indigenous-peoples-defending-environment-all#:~:text=Indigenous%20lands%20make%20up%20around,effective%20stewards%20of%20the%20environment\">Indigenous land makes up to 20% of the Earth\u2019s territory, but contains around 80% of the remaining biodiversity.<\/a> Indigenous communities are the guardians of biodiversity, while belonging to the group most affected by the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IndigenousPeoples?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IndigenousPeoples<\/a> are the best guardians of the world&#39;s biodiversity.<br><br>To sustain biodiversity and all life on Earth, including humanity, it is essential to listen to and support the communities that have protected it for millennia.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AK57f67Qva\">https:\/\/t.co\/AK57f67Qva<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COP15?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COP15<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uCaTKfzWSL\">pic.twitter.com\/uCaTKfzWSL<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Greenpeace International (@Greenpeace) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Greenpeace\/status\/1600837658196201474?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 8, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<h4 class=\"has-dark-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Cut emissions <strong>instead of offsetting them &#8211; The system has to change<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Instead of greenwashing the climate crisis, we need to address the problem at its root &#8211; fossil fuels and the destruction of ecosystems. For real climate action, the historical and current largest emitters have to step up. This includes radically cutting their emissions and providing loss and damage reparations for the most affected people and areas.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>We need regulations that effectively end the use of fossil fuels and allow for a socially just transition. This will also prevent further environmental destruction and pollution through open pit mines, fracking for gas or oil spills.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Net zero pledges from companies that want to continue business as usual are not an option. Business as usual means no future!<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>Carbon offsetting projects overestimate the amount of carbon they save. They are a surefire way for us to miss our hard-fought climate targets. Carbon removal and \u201cnature-based solutions&#8221; are greenwashing at its best. Instead of saving us from climate breakdown, they threaten livelihoods, human rights and biodiversity.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n\n<\/div><div class=\"boxed\">\n<p>For<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greens-efa.eu\/en\/Climate-Law\"> climate justice<\/a>, we need to rethink the entire capitalist system that is based on the use of fossil fuels and destruction of nature.
