How should fish be caught?

Pathways to sustainable fisheries - WATCH THE LIVESTREAM

PRESENTATION

This conference will explore a step by step approach to fisheries management, going from the big picture to the local implementation. Speakers will discuss practical ways of making an inventory of the sea, establishing harvest strategies, choosing technical measures, establishing management plans and, finally, how to make long term management plans work successfully.

PROGRAMME

Moderation by Green MEP Isabella Lövin

> THE NEED FOR MARITIME SPATIAL PLANNING IN FISHERIES MANAGEMENT

David Goldsborough
Senior Researcher, Centre for Marine Policy, Wageningen University, the Netherlands.
Drawing on his work with the North Sea RAC to resolve potential sectoral conflicts with the Natura 2000 site Dogger Bank, David Goldsborough will show some difficulties and opportunities for including fisheries in marine spatial planning.

> VIEWS OF DIFFERENT STRATEGIES FOR THE USE OF THE RESOURCES

  • Rupert Crilly
Environmental Economist at New Economics Foundation, London, UK
Environmental economist Rupert Crilly will elaborate on some of the findings in his report ‘Jobs lost at sea’ which concluded that European fish stocks are delivering much less than they could if they were managed sustainably.
  • Anne-Marie Vergez
Hook-and-line Fisher of hake, St-Jean de Luz, France
Anne-Marie Vergez, a fisher for 24 years, will share her experiences of fishing methods that reduce the damage to fish and the environment, such as fishing for hake with deep-set longlines, and how fishers in St-Jean de Luz have promoted locally caught fish to get at better price from the consumer.

 > KEYS TO SUCCESSFUL LONG TERM MANAGEMENT PLANS

Sarah Kraak
Marine scientists, Marine Institute & University College Cork, Ireland
Sarah Kraak will talk about the necessary conditions for compliance and effectiveness of long term management plans, based on her findings in a recent STECF evaluation of multi-annual plans for cod, and her proposed system of "real-time incentives" for fishers to shoulder management responsibilities.

> SWEDISH EXPERIMENTS WITH CO-MANAGEMENT IN FISHERIES

Axel Wenblad
Former Director General of the Swedish Board of Fisheries, Göteborg, Sweden
Former Director of Fisheries in Sweden, Axel Wenblad, will elaborate on the experiences and challenges of several local co-management initiatives in Swedish fisheries. ___________________________ Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in English, French, Spanish and German
