EFA MEP Diana Riba i Giner cautions on the Fundamental rights situation.

Diana Riba, EFA MEP, intervened in plenary to discuss the current situation of Fundamental rights in the European Union following the report published on the “Situation of fundamental rights in the EU in 2020 and 2021”.

“We must admit that the health of fundamental rights in Europe is not at its best. From the heart of the Union to our borders, fundamental rights are not guaranteed, and this is certainly bad news for the European project.” Diana Riba said.

After the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on society. Following the recent issues in European borders, MEP Riba i Giner warned about the current health of fundamental rights and how inequalities increase and structural deficiencies, among others, have only worsened since the pandemic.
“This report is also a wake-up call to the impact that the pandemic had - and still has - on our societies. We have seen inequalities increase and structural deficiencies and regressive trends in rights and freedoms that already existed in many countries worsen.” MEP Riba warned.

Diana Riba also mentioned the repercussions of the ongoing war against Ukraine and the current energy crisis as catalyst factors for the detriment of the fundamental rights in Europe and asked members to focus on the rights and dignity of the people most vulnerable in our society.
“I would like to appeal to the Member States: put the dignity and rights of people, especially the most vulnerable, at the heart of your political action.” She said.

EFA MEP and member of the LIBE Committee, Diana Riba i Giner, concluded by urging the institutions to remember what the European Union stands for.

“It is now, more than ever, when Europe must show that it really is the area of rights and freedoms that we praise in our speeches.”
