Ambitious targets for clean cars

CO2 Regulation

Members of the European Parliament demand clear and ambitious targets for cleaner cars, according to the Environment Committee (ENVI) which has just voted on the European Commission's proposal for European CO2 regulation for cars and light commercial vehicles. A majority of the committee agreed to reduce CO2 emissions by 20 percent by 2025 and by 45 percent by 2030. The European Commission had proposed 30 percent by 2030.

Bas Eickhout, energy policy spokesperson for the Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament and coordinator in the ENVI Committee, comments:

"It is good news that the committee strengthened the Commission's proposal – despite huge lobby efforts and against the votes of the Conservatives.

We would have liked far more ambitious targets in order to achieve the Paris climate targets and to increase zero-emission traffic on our roads. Incentives and surcharges for the manufacturers of conventional cars and electric cars are needed to get the auto-industry on the road to electrification."

Background

Members of the European Parliament are expected to vote on the position in the Plenary week from 1 to 4 October, after which negotiations will begin with the Council and the European Commission ("trilogue").
