Dismantling the nuclear argument

Why nuclear is no climate-friendly solution!

Lately there has been an increasing openness towards and support of nuclear energy in Europe. In the run-up to the COP 21 in Paris the lobbying efforts by the nuclear industry are intensifying. Huge amounts of money are spent to promote nuclear power as "low carbon technology" or "climate-friendly indigenous energy source", in order to encourage the construction of new nuclear reactors and prevent the shutdown of dangerous old reactors that cannot compete economically with clean energy sources like wind and solar power.

This lobbying offensive clearly needs a Green answer.

To this end, Greens/EFA would like to invite you to the conference “Dismantling the nuclear argument - Why nuclear is no climate-friendly solution!” in the European Parliament in Brussels on 2nd September 2015.

The conference will be divided into two parts:

The first part is dedicated to the presentation of the findings of the World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2015, which gives a thorough analysis of the situation of the nuclear industry, it´s importance in terms of energy policy and the economic state of the sector. Thereby, it provides solid and convincing evidence to counter the nuclear offensive.

The study “Nuclear Energy and Climate Change” by WISE Paris will provide further ground focusing on the dismantling of arguments advocating nuclear energy as one of the best means to reduce CO2 emissions in the fight against climate change.

The aim of the second part of the event is to better link anti-nuclear activists from the Greens and civil society from all over Europe. Hence we have invited representatives from the campaign "Don´t nuke the climate", a network of civil society organisations and citizen movements[1], that joined forces in order to expose false arguments and keep damaging solutions out of the COP 21 climate talks in Paris.
