Ana Miranda MEP: “Cuba Deserves Respect”
EFA MEP Ana Miranda delivered a powerful speech at the European Parliament, to defend the Cuban people against what she described as “scandalous” attacks by the European right and far right, accusing them of hypocrisy and ideological bias.
Miranda MEP, took the plenary debate opportunity to strongly criticised the renewed focus on the country by conservative forces:
“How the right loves to walk arm-in-arm with the far right in this European Parliament,” she said.
“They bring up the issue of Cuba again because they long for the days of Aznar, when all relations between the Cuban people and European peoples were cut off.” She said.
The Galizan MEP emphasised the deep historical and cultural ties between her country, Galiza, and Cuba, speaking about the continued solidarity with the Cuban people. Describing Cubans as “brave, honest, educated, and supportive,” the EFA MEP condemned the ongoing U.S. blockade against the island as unjust and inhumane.
“The hypocrisy of this anti-Cuban alliance is scandalous and complicit in suffocating a people.”
MEP Miranda also pointed to a perceived double standard in the Parliament’s priorities, highlighting the recent refusal to allow a debate on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
“But what do they care if people suffer? They already showed that yesterday, by blocking a debate on Gaza.”
“Why don’t they call for the cancellation of the agreement between Israel and the European Union, instead of attacking peaceful people like Cuba who show solidarity with humanity?”
Ana Miranda EFA MEP, concluded her statement with a firm demand for respect and honest cooperation.
“They attack the political dialogue and cooperation between the EU and Cuba because they prefer politics of hatred… Cuba deserves respect.”
For Miranda and the European Free Alliance Group in the European Parliament, the defence of Cuba is not only about foreign policy, but about fairness, dignity, and the right of peoples to sovereignty and solidarity.
