Debriefing of the June 2025 Plenary Session

Clean Industrial Deal

On Thursday, the European Parliament adopted its first resolution on the Clean Industrial Deal. The resolution includes a call on the Commission for a clear plan and concrete measures on how to make Europe’s industries greener and cleaner. Thanks to the efforts of the Greens/EFA the report includes a request for a clean tech plan, a strengthened social dimension and prioritised electrification, renewable energy, and energy efficiency to help Europe stay competitive and ready for the future.

Sara Matthieu MEP, Greens/EFA negotiator on this file in the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), commented:

“Europe’s chance to compete in the world is green industry and technologies. The Greens/EFA group have put forward clear and forward-looking demands to ensure Europe’s industrial policy remains competitive, sustainable and socially just. Where usually the conservative parties weaken climate policy, we succeeded in convincing them that future proofing our industry is our answer to Donald Trump and China.

“Europe needs to mobilise every possible tool to accelerate the transformation of our industries into a climate-neutral, resource-efficient and just economy. The Greens/EFA pushed through that the resolution calls for a significant scale-up of investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency and electrification and demands that the Commission develop a clean tech plan. For the sake of our strategic autonomy we need to supercharge sustainable battery production in Europe to create futureproof jobs and support the transition to zero-emission mobility.”

Hungary: Pride ban debate

On Wednesday, MEPs debated the banning of Pride in Budapest. The Greens/EFA Group has called on the Council and the Commission to not stand idly by while Hungary descends further into authoritarianism.

Kim van Sparrentak MEP, Co-Chair of the LGBTIQ+  Intergroup, comments:

“If banning a pride within the European Union is accepted by the European Commission, who knows what will be next. We need the Commission to take action and not allow Orban to clamp down further on freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. We will stand with our friends in Budapest and march with pride for Hungarian citizens and fundamental rights.”

Daniel Freund MEP, Greens/EFA Member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Home Affairs and Justice, comments:

“The Commission and Council cannot continue to stand watch while an autocracy is created under their noses, where people’s rights are assaulted and civil society is silenced. European capitals cannot ignore the anti-democratic drive of the Orban regime any longer. It’s time for action, to protect democracy, fundamental rights and the rule of law. We will defend the right to protest - see you in Budapest next weekend."

EU-Israel Association Agreement

On Tuesday, MEPs will debated a potential review of the EU-Israel Association Agreement and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Greens/EFA Group has called for the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement. We also urge an embargo on arms and equipment exports that contribute to the conflict in Gaza and call for an end to the expansion of illegal settlements and de facto annexation of occupied Palestinian territories. The Israeli government has a legal and moral responsibility to ensure life-saving aid reaches those in urgent need. We also maintain our call for an immediate ceasefire, targeted sanctions, and full accountability.

This Monday, EU Foreign Ministers will discuss the EU-Israel Association Agreement. We created a tool to send them an email and demand that the EU immediately suspends the agreement.
