Scotland and Europe

Statement by Greens/EFA co-presidents Rebecca Harms and Philippe Lamberts after meeting with Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon

Greens/EFA co-presidents Philippe Lamberts and Rebecca Harms today met with Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. Commenting after the meeting Philippe Lamberts and Rebecca Harms said:

“While deeply regrettable, we respect the outcome of the UK referendum and believe negotiations about how to implement the result of the referendum must begin as soon as possible. These negotiations must be fair to everyone, both those in the UK and those across Europe who are directly affected by the outcome. There are clearly no easy answers to any of the questions that lie ahead but the clear majorities in Scotland and Northern Ireland for remaining in the EU cannot be ignored. We have told First Minister Sturgeon that we support her desire to represent the Scottish interest in the negotiations once they begin, and that we support exploring all the options that allow Scotland to remain in EU for which the Scottish people have clearly expressed their preference.”
