Housing: The Greens/EFA Group stand in solidarity with the protesters in Madrid

Last week, together with Más Madrid, the Greens/EFA Group organised a street action in Madrid to bring attention to the growing housing crisis sweeping across the EU. 

The action was attended by Nicolae Ștefănuță, Greens/EFA MEP and European Parliament Vice-President, who comments: 
 
“Investment funds are buying up properties and driving up rents, as we saw in the sad case of Maricarmen Abascal. The Greens/EFA Group and I stand in solidarity with her and those protesting for access to decent and affordable housing in Spain.
 
“Housing is not a commodity, it is a human right. We must ensure security of tenure with stable, open-ended tenancies, including automatic renewal, to avoid cases like Mari Carmen’s. We must tax speculation on housing as well as vacant and second homes, stop the Airbnb-ification of our cities, invest in public, green and affordable and social housing, and renovate empty homes. These are the solutions we are fighting for in the European Parliament.”
