MEPs adopt COP31 position: No credibility in Antalya without a fossil phase-out - Greens/EFA Group

COP31

Today, MEPs voted on the Parliament’s position for the EU to take to the UN conference on climate (COP31), taking place from November 9 to 20 in Antalya, Turkey. The resolution calls on the EU and all Parties to reaffirm 1.5°C and advance the roadmap to transition away from fossil fuels, with the EU taking the lead, and to urgently scale up climate finance for adaptation and loss & damage while making the Just Transition Mechanism operational.

Pär Holmgren MEP, Greens/EFA Group shadow rapporteur for the COP31 resolution and part of the official Parliament delegation to Antalya, comments:

“Our planet is facing a triple crisis of climate change, ecological breakdown and pollution. The world must get behind the transition away from fossil fuels and towards clean energy. All major countries and players, including the EU, should present plans to phase-out fossil fuels at COP31.

“We are on track to surpass the 1.5°C mark of global heating, but that is no reason to give up the fight: Every fraction of a degree matters and all major players need to speed up in cutting their emissions.”

Kai Tegethoff MEP, Greens/EFA Group and Volt Europe member of the Environmental Committee and part of the official Parliament delegation to Antalya, comments:

“From reversing the combustion engine ban to delaying the methane regulation, the EU is undermining its own Green Deal. We are going from a climate leader to a climate laggard who will be left behind by the likes of China in the race for cleaner technologies and a greener economy.

“It’s time to pay up on climate financing. The world needs more grants for adaptation and the poorly funded Loss and Damage Fund. Countries from the global south shouldn’t be expected to foot the bill for a crisis they didn’t create. There needs to be debt relief for vulnerable countries and the Just Transition Mechanism needs to kick into gear.”
