UN Climate talks

Greens regret resignation of UN top climate official Yvo de Boer

Commenting on the resignation of Yvo de Boer as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change as from 1 July, Rebecca Harms, President of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament said:

"The Greens regret the decision of Yvo de Boer to step down as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. We appreciated his commitment, his dedication and his proactive approach to the climate talks during his 4 years tenure. His outspoken style might have earned him time and again criticism, but his frankness stimulated the negotiation process. It is a pity that Yvo de Boer didn't seek an extension of his mandate, which would have ended in September 2010.

Now, the choice of the right person for this key post is crucial to get the difficult and stalled climate talks going again and achieve the necessary result in Mexico in November."
