EFA MEPs stand with the Amnesty law in Spain

Today in the European Parliament, MEPs debated the Amnesty Law in Spain in a debate with Commissioner Reynders requested by the EPP and ECR Groups with the support of Renew and ID.

EFA MEPs denounce the abuse of the right-wing parties to promote a national debate in the European chamber in a sad attempt to attack the agreements made by the progressive forces with the President of Spain, Pedro Sanchez.

Jordi Solé EFA Group President said:

“Now they are worried because we are going to bring forward an amnesty law that is as necessary as it is just. A step forward to return to politics what should never have left it and thus move forward in the democratic resolution of a conflict that is political.”

“ In spite of the political, judicial and media right-wing opposition to the amnesty, it will prove to be neither against the Spanish constitution nor against the fundamental values of the EU.”

“On the contrary, it attempts to repair a democratic failure: the failure of police, judicial and economic repression against a democratic, legitimate and very much alive movement, despite what some may think, such as the Catalan independence movement.”

Diana Riba i Giner, EFA MEP and Spokesperson of ERC in the European Parliament said:

“Amnesties are not an anomaly. Several Member States provide for them in their constitutions and more than 50 have been adopted in the European Union in recent decades.

“Verán, en esta cámara preocupa el estado de derecho en España. Preocupa que el Consejo General del Poder Judicial lleve 5 años caducado; que senadores del PP alardeen de que controlan las salas del tribunal supremo por la puerta de atrás; y de que jueces hagan caso omiso a la separación de poderes al manifestarse contra leyes aún por aprobar.”

“We know that this amnesty will not put an end to the conflict, but it will allow us to address on an equal footing the core of the issue, which is nothing more and nothing less than Catalonia's right to self-determination.”
