EFA remembers Winnie Ewing

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of former MEP Winnie Ewing, at the age of 93.

Winnie Ewing first sat in the European Parliament in 1975 and was first elected in 1979 as the first Scottish National Party MEP, representing the SNP until 1999. Having first served in the House of Commons since 1968, she became known in the European Parliament as “Madame Ecosse” and was later given the title of Mother of the European Parliament.

Winnie Ewing was the first MEP to represent Scotland when the UK joined the EU in 1975. We will continue her legacy and work for Scotland’s voice in Europe.

“We will leave a light on for Scotland”

We at the European Free Alliance Group in the European Parliament want to send our deepest condolences to the Ewing Family.

We will remember Mrs Ewing as a fighter and someone who never doubted speaking up for her beloved country.

“Stop the world, Scotland wants to get on”- Winnie Ewing.
