The right scuppers crucial vote on Europe 2020 in the European Parliament

The European parliament today postponed a crucial vote on a resolution on economic governance, the euro crisis and the EU 2020 strategy. The vote was polarised between right and left with 342 Christian-Democrats, Conservatives and Liberals voting for postponement and 270 Socialists, Greens and European Left (GUE) voting against. Commenting on the decision, Daniel Cohn-Bendit and Rebecca Harms, Co-Presidents of the Greens/EFA group said:

"We regret the postponement of this vote, which leaves Parliament without a strong position on the most urgent topic of these tumultuous times. Sadly, a timely response of Parliament to the euro crisis and the Europe 2020 strategy was not possible due to the lack of will to compromise by the Right. Socialists and Greens presented a common resolution, which contains a strong message to citizens on how to exit the current crisis. We will try to gather broad support for a joint text, which should be voted in June right before the EU summit."
