Greek Financial Crisis

EU Greens call for top-level meeting in Brussels on financial rescue package for Greece

In a letter to Parliament's President, Jerzy Buzek, the Co-Presidents of the Greens/EFA group, Rebecca Harms and Dany Cohn-Bendit today called for convocation of a top-level meeting on the Greek financial crisis. Harms and Cohn-Bendit proposed a conference of the Presidents of the political groups in the European Parliament with the president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, and the European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Olli Rehn. Given the urgency of the situation, the meeting should be held this week in the European Parliament in Brussels.

The reason for the Green/EFA Co-Presidents' request is that Greece's request to activate the emergency loan package as agreed by the EU has led to strong reactions from some Member States which is causing a delay in the release of funds to Greece and considerable accompanying political turmoil. Harms and Cohn-Bendit stressed, that "it is crucial that the EU addresses this issue urgently, in a coherent manner, in order to avoid dangerous consequences for the Eurozone, and in general to ensure financial stability throughout the EU."

The Greens/EFA also requested to add Council and Commission statements on the future of the Euro to the agenda of the 5-6 May 2010 mini Plenary session.
