Plenary debate on the Humanitarian and environmental consequences of the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam

Ukraine

At the request of the Greens/EFA Group, the humanitarian and environmental consequences of the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam has been added to the joint debate on Ukraine, taking place this morning in the European Parliament. Watch the debate here.

Heidi Hautala MEP, Greens/EFA Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Vice-President of the European Parliament, comments:

“An immediate humanitarian aid in response to the Nova Kakhova Dam attack must be provided. With this attack, Russia is not only perpetuating its genocidal policy against Ukrainians but also committing ecocide. We must support investigations into criminal accountability for Russia’s violation of the laws of war.

“The Greens/EFA Group are calling for targeted long-term assistance to mitigate the severe damage to the natural environment and population health. The EU needs to invest in the sustainable reconstruction of Ukraine, to design for the recovery of a clean and green Ukraine, underpinned by the European Green Deal.”
