AirBnB and the Digital Services Act - Possibilities for regulating online short-term rental to ensure affordable housing

We want to have a conversation about ‘the AirBnB-effect.’ The expansive growth of short-term holiday rental is extracting housing from the market and driving up prices, and has a negative impact on liveability in large cities and popular tourist destinations in Europe.

This phenomenon contributes to the housing crisis in Europe by spurring on gentrification, touristification and financialisation of the housing market. Cities have been stepping in to regulate, but platforms such as AirBnB found shelter under EU rules.

We want to discuss with you and several experts on what the options are of regulating short-term holiday rental under the upcoming Digital Services Act, the package that will be put forward by the Commission on the 2nd of December, with the goal of better regulating online platforms.
