Draft Environment Committee report calls for 65% less greenhouse gases by 2030

EU climate law

The European Parliament Environment Committee's draft for a European Climate Law calls for a 65% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, going beyond the European Commission's proposal of 55%. The draft report also calls for a CO2 budget and a European Climate Council. The European Commission's proposal for a European climate law is a central element of the Green Deal.

Bas Eickhout MEP, Greens/EFA Vice Chair of the Environment Committee, comments:

"The science must be heard, a 65% reduction in emissions by 2030 is the only way we will be able to keep global temperature rises under 1.5c and stave off the worst effects of the climate crisis. The next ten years are crucial to achieving the Paris climate targets, which is why Member States must match the ambition of MEPs on climate. The European Climate Council must be independent and include science and research.

"Climate protection must be enshrined in law with access to justice so governments that fail to implement climate protection can be held accountable. The Environment Committee must stand behind this report and make the European Parliament the driving force behind a Climate Law that will give the Green Deal the strength it needs to succeed."

Timetable:
On 27 May, the MEPs of the leading Environment Committee of the European Parliament will discuss the draft, the vote in the Environment Committee is scheduled for the beginning of July, the exact date has not yet been fixed. The plenary vote is expected in September, followed by the European Parliament's negotiations with the Council and the European Commission under the German Presidency.

The draft report is due to be published shortly on the European Parliament's website.
