Study on transport emissions

EU fails to curb emissions from transport says a new report by EEA

The report of the EEA states that " To enable the Eu to meet future overall greenhouse gas emission reduction targets by 2020, the transport sector must raise its game and improve ist environmental performance".

To achieve the targets of the "Bali roadmap" transport volume growth would have to be limited to +4 to -2% over the period 2010-2020, compared to a growth of 15% in a business-as-usual scenario.

Among the key messages of the report are the facts that freight transport growth outpaces economic growth: the road freight sector witnessed an increase of 38% between 1995 and 2005 (GDP increased by 24.5% over the samed period). Its share (in tonne-kilometre) in the total EU-25 freight market is now of 44%.

Passenger transport also continues to grow:

  • + 9% between 1995 and 2005 for rail passengers;
  • +18% between 1995 and 2005 for passenger car use;
  • + 49% between 1995 and 2004 in air passenger travel;

All in all greenhouse gas emissions from transport (excluding international air travel and maritime transport) increased by 27% between 1990 and 2005 in EEA countries.
