Paris Ratification

Now we need action

The European Parliament today voted by a considerable majority in favour of European Union ratification of the Paris Agreement.

Commenting after the vote, Green climate change policy spokesperson Bas Eickhout said:

"The European Parliament has today taken another big step towards fulfilling the ambitions agreed last year in Paris. It is vital that this decision is followed by swift ratification by all Member States.

"Of course, not all sectors have yet aligned with the Paris Agreement. I hope that the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), currently meeting in Montreal to agree on how to curb aviation emissions, will take a similarly positive approach and present a robust deal that will ensure we can meet the climate targets agreed by world leaders last year."

Green energy spokesperson Claude Turmes added:

"It is important that we carry the momentum from Paris right through to COP22 in Marrakesh this November. It is very welcome that the Paris deal will be ratified by the EU, but what's really important now is that we deliver on what we have promised. We need to see much more ambition when it comes to energy efficiency and renewables and to ratchet up EU climate policies and targets for 2020, 2030 and 2050."
