Parliament reiterates support for the protection and rights of minorities

The European Parliament has adopted the report on the implementation of the Europeans Citizens' Initiative (ECI), which includes proposals to further support the organizers ECIs and to increase the visibility of this unique participatory instrument.

Additionally, the European Parliament reminds the Commission of the need to put forward legislative proposals regarding the rights of minorities inside the European Union, as the successful ECI "Minority SafePack" had already proposed. The Parliament's report asks again for an appropriate answer from the Commission. The European Parliament already voted in 2020 on a resolution to support the main demands of the Minority SafePack ECI and the Commission has yet to make any progress.

EFA MEP François Alfonsi, and shadow rapporteur of the file said

"The European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) is one of the pillars of European democracy. Through this procedure, European citizens enjoy an essential democratic right: the right to make their voices heard. But this right is only valid on one condition: that those to whom it is addressed are genuinely willing to hear it!"

"It is vital to simplify the procedure for organisers and, above all, to ensure that the Commission responds appropriately to valid ECIs. The Commission cannot repeat what happened with the Minority SafePack ECI!"
