Greens/EFA call for urgent action on oceans & extreme sea-levels

IPCC Special Report on Oceans

Today, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations, in its report on climate change in the oceans and the cryosphere, warns urgently of the consequences of climate change and rising sea levels and calls for decarbonisation by the year 2050. The cryosphere is the entirety of the water on earth bound as ice.

Bas Eickhout MEP, Greens/EFA climate spokesperson, comments:

"The dramatic melting of ice and rising sea levels must be an urgent warning that we cannot wait any longer for real action on climate change. The EU can't afford to come away empty-handed from the UN Climate Change Conference in Chile this December and in Glasgow next year after the poor showing of this week's summit in New York.

"There is still the time to act, the Greens/EFA group will give the Climate Commissioner-designate Frans Timmermans clear priorities and demand at least a 65 percent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030. EU governments must clear the way to finally include shipping in the Emissions Trading Scheme. EU governments must fulfil the Paris climate goals and commit themselves to decarbonisation and a 100% renewable energy based economy before 2050."

Background

At the hearing on 8 October, Greens/EFA MEPs will ask Climate Commissioner-designate Frans Timmermans how he intends to make the EU a climate pioneer. On the same day, the IPCC report on climate change commemorates the anniversary of its call for urgent action to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees and meet the Paris climate  targets. At the final rallies of the global climate strike on 27 September, people around the world will once again take to the streets for more climate protection. The 25th UN Climate Change Conference ("COP25") begins on 2 December in Santiago de Chile, the 26th COP will take place in Glasgow in November 2020.
