Global migration needs a global response

UN Migration Pact

Judith Sargentini, Greens/EFA rapporteur on human rights and migration in third countries, comments on today's debate on the UN Migration Pact in the European Parliament Plenary:

"The European Union will undermine its credibility if it cannot show its united support to this global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration, a voluntary declaration that promotes the protections of human rights, and the humane treatment of migrants. Global migration needs a global response and it would be absurd for the EU not to find an common stance on such an important issue. "

"Countries that will sign the treaty commit to register migrant children at birth to give them a legal status and allow them access to schools; take effort to integrate migrants in society and if needed will assist migrants to return home. That is relevant for migrants worldwide, in Europe but also in Africa and Asia."

Background

The UN Migration Pact sets international standards against human trafficking and for the registration, documentation, basic provision and protection of migrants as well as for regular migration and improved cooperation in border management. It is not legally binding. The "Global Pact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration" will be signed at a United Nations conference in Marrakesh on 10 and 11 December 2018.
