COP30: EU must keep climate promise of Paris alive

Today, MEPs have just voted on the Parliament's resolution ahead of the UN Climate Conference in Brazil (COP30). The resolution calls on the EU to show global leadership and for the COP to reaffirm its commitment to 1.5c of warming and the phasing out of fossil fuels. Last year, global carbon dioxide levels rose by the highest levels since records began. The resolution is the European Parliament's mandate for COP30.

Pär Holmgren MEP, Greens/EFA shadow rapporteur on the COP30 resolution, comments:

“The EU needs to act as a world leader on climate. President von der Leyen needs to go to Belém with a strong hand to play. Other countries are watching what we do in Europe and are willing to take action but we need to show that we are serious about the climate. The EU must commit to the strongest possible 2040 climate target ahead of COP30.

“The promises made to younger generations in Paris ten years ago must be kept. We owe it to our planet, our children and our common future to fight global heating and stave off the devastating effects of climate change.

“COP30 must be more than just a talking shop, it must result in action. The EU can have a deciding role to play but we need to act as credible leaders on the climate.”
