GDPR: MEPs to vote on faster and fairer enforcement

Today, MEPs will adopt additional procedural rules regarding the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Seven years after the GDPR came into force, citizens still face delays and inconsistencies in how their data protection rights are enforced across borders. These new rules, negotiated by Greens/EFA and Pirate Party MEP Markéta Gregorová, close these gaps by setting clear deadlines and strengthening the rights of complainants and consumers. This means faster, fairer, and more effective enforcement of privacy rights across the EU.

Greens/EFA and Pirate Party MEP Markéta Gregorová, the European Parliament’s rapporteur on the file, comments:

“We've finally secured a long-overdue regulation on GDPR enforcement procedures, ending years of legal limbo in cross-border cases. I personally pushed for a key reform: data protection authorities will now be required to resolve straightforward cases within 12 months and complex ones within 15 months—extensions will only be granted in exceptional cases. Never ending cases against Big Tech are now a thing of the past. We’re introducing clear, enforceable deadlines, along with strong rights for complainants and companies. All parties will have a voice in the process and national laws providing additional rights are protected. Cooperation between authorities is also strengthened by ensuring early consensus on the case. This law will make enforcement more consistent, faster, fairer, and more transparent.”
