UN Convention on Climate Change

Talks in Bonn to set stage for future action on climate

Nearly 200 nations will gather this week in Bonn for meetings of the Subsidiary Bodies:

  • The 24th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA)
  • The 24th session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI)
  • The first Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol.

Those sessions will be preceded on 15-16 May by the Dialogue on long-term cooperative action to adress climate change by enhancing implementation of the Convention.
The talks are part of the UN framework convention on climate change (UNFCC).

On the eve of this meeting, the UK based NGO Christian Aid published a report, The Climate of poverty:facts, fears and hopes, which estimates that a "staggering" 182 million people in sub-Saharan Africa could die of disease directly attributable to climate change by 2100. In its report the NGO also calls on rich countries to fund a switch from fossil fuels to renewable energies for the world's poorest regions.
